Follow this link to read an introduction... People with acne have a very high risk for sun related skin problems, especially if they are taking prescription anti-biotics to treat the infections. If you have had acne for years, your immune system is compromised so you need to protect yourself from skin cancers and any contagious diseases more than most people. If you smoke, your risk is significantly higher than non smokers and your vulnerability to UV damage is great.
Chin Acne - The Cause: Hormonal imbalance
There's a reason many women have breakouts on their chin right before their period: That part of the face is particularly sensitive to rises in progesterone and testosterone. Many women simply experience mild acne, but if your breakouts tend to be more severe or painful and are no match for OTC treatments, it's time to see your ob-gyn or an endocrinologist. We also recommend an experienced acupunturist that has their own herbal inventory - the combination of Chinese herbs and acupuncture has a long track record of successful treatment!
"Deep, cystic acne on the chin or along the jaw line can be a sign of underlying polycystic ovary syndrome [PCOS] and other types of hormonal abnormalities," says Dr. Chapas. Left untreated, the condition can increase your risk for diabetes and infertility.
A study published in July 2010 validates what I found in my own research 15 years ago: Don't specifically blame chocolate, fatty foods or salt for acne! The link found in comparing 27 studies is dairy products, and foods high on the glycemic index (white bread, pasta and white potatoes). More pronounced and frequent breakouts occur when foods from these groups are consumed 3x a day. Overall, acne has been determined to be more common in those who drink the most skim milk, suggesting that the hormones in milk are more problematic than the fat content. Milk is a common ingredient in chocolate products (so look for dark chocolate). Also, fatty foods often contain milk, milk fat, butter. Of course, salt is in most prepared foods with or without milk, but when it comes to cheese you get a triple whammy: hormones, salt and milk fats. Young people with chronic acne should simply test the theory by restricting milk and salt intake for 1 week and notice how the skin responds.
September 2010: concerns are still focused on dairy products made in the USA using milk from cows treated with the engineered bovine growth hormone rBGH from Monsanto. To date, these products are not allowed in Japan, Australia, New Zealand and all 27 European Union nations and Canada. Why does the FDA not protect us? Investigate your brands to see if they are on the list using this controversial ingredient? Haagen Daz and Breyers "natural" ice creams contain this! A substance known as IGF-1 increases from 50-600% in these cows. Another problem with milk from any animal we use is that they are encouraged to eat salt and thereby more iodine is introduced into their milk. Iodine is a major problem for those humans predisposed genetically to having acne. Look into it...
Another concern to address: sugar. Sugar supports inflammation. Acne is inflammation. Sugar substitutes are controversial if from a test tube: aspartame (now known as AminoSweet and marketed as a natural sweetner - it is not!).
People with acne must wear sun protection. We have a new spf 30 lotion now (2011) with no artificial ingredients (and gluten free) that can even be slept in to help fight acne inflammation. It is very innovative, and I say this after 35 years in the cosmetic industry.
