Joy-Marie Peterson's professional experiences began over 35 years ago when she was an
independent make up artist- styling advertising shoots, fashion runway work and
weddings. For many years she built her reputation and clientele working
for Nordstrom stores in Oregon and California. As a full time
make up artist for those stores, she represented Lancôme,
Borghese (the original, not the Costco imitations), Prescriptives and
other top brands. With her first trip to Paris, to check out the fashion industry and visit the Lancôme Institut in 1979,
she began to focus on skin care. A few years later she moved to Los Angeles to
continue her education in that field and use her make up skills to land
work in television and the music video industry. After graduating and receiving her
aesthetician's licensing, her first business, Joie
de Vie, was founded in 1985 in Los Angeles as a skin care practice. The name Joie de Vie is now for our
fourteen year old web
catalog. Joie de Vie as a skin care salon closed after
she was injured in a car accident and needed to focus on her recovery
but the web site continued. Spending her time in research, she
began to develop an expertise in disorders like Melasma, Rosacea and
Keratosis Pilaris. Reading about personal care and pharmeceutical
ingredients turning up in rivers and lakes, effecting wildlife, and human
health, she became an advocate for consumer
education. Speaking to local groups and classrooms, she began to
educate the public regarding all the harmful chemicals that were in cosmetics, unsafe practices in beauty salons and the lack of oversight the FDA
and health departments provide to protect the
public. An educator, she lectures, writes and has often been featured
on local news and chat shows for her knowledge about the human skin and
the frailities thereof.
Currently, as Expert
Skin Care: New Era, we have been working with products developed by a number of
environmental chemists, activists and aestheticians from around the
world. Still regularly consulting with
naturopathic physicians, we seek to form a holistic approach to skin care
and hygiene practices and products. After all these years we have streamlined
our inventory to the products we've been able to document for superb results in the facial room and
for home-care. In the facial studio, our aestheticians only use
certified organic solutions, that are paraben, triclosan and artificial
fragrance free products. These can be hormone disruptors, among
other concerns. We only use natural cleaning products
to perform daily housekeeping in the offices here. We follow the research and warnings from Campaign For Safe Cosmetics and
the Environmental Working Group, both non-profit organizations intent on
improving safety in personal care products, foods and pharmaceuticals
around the world. We feature organic skin peels, Microdermabrasion and Ultra Sound/Micro Current
technologies. The founder continues her education in 2010, in Chemistry, Environmental Sciences,
Toxicology and Public Health Education. While still traveling around the USA
as time allows her, Joy-Marie is determined to learn the latest
ingredients, health news, naturopathic and dermatological medicines and aesthetic skin treatment protocols to better serve
and inform the public. Currently she is doing research
on pharmaceutical and personal care (cosmetics) ingredients that are
contaminating our water. You may not realize this but your local
waste water treatment facility is probably not doing anything about these
potentially harmful ingredients getting into the streams, rivers and
oceans from your sinks, drains and toilets. Do not flush fragrances,
make up,
skin care lotions or pills down the toilet or pour them down the
sink. Ask your local trash hauler what to do with them.
Here in Oregon, we are asked to put them in zip lock bags and set them in
the garbage container for pickup. At Joie we use the large size so 1
bag fits several bottles. The local landfill service
disposes of them so they don't pollute - we hope! Its a big crisis
so do some internet searching and find out how you can be more diligent in
reducing the pollution we create. One resource we actively support is The
Oregon Environmental Council, www.oeconline.org,
an organization that has celebrated 40 years of educating the public
about environmental issues and providing information freely so we can all
live safer, healthier lives!

Once she has her
degree we will build our own lab and begin developing a new concept in
sustainable, safe skin care. Natural and therapeutic ingredients with focus on
treating chronic inflammations, immune response, sun
damage and diabetic issues in skin care.
As a skin care/cosmetics retail business in Portland, Oregon, we have been shipping worldwide and delivering
around the Portland metropolitan
area for over 25 years. We have used a secured online
shopping cart, Virtual Cart, for over 13 years and we accept Visa and
MasterCard, processing payment information through secure electronic
technology. We do not buy or sell customer
information. If an online order form looks suspicious we call
the customer and their credit card company to double check so we can do our best to protect
our customers from stolen cards and identity theft. Most mail orders ship within
48 hours of receiving
customer order forms online but occasionally there is a delay
. Because we order many "preservative free" items by
special request, they are handmade so they arrive to customers
door fresh as possible. This takes time. In the USA we normally use Priority Mail.
Express Mail will be charged more than the figures on our order form,
which are based on Priority Mail.
We no longer ship outside of the USA due
to the fragility of our chemical free products and the continuing nuisance
of credit card fraud and mail theft.
Some products are hand made in a
FDA Certified, specialty lab so once in awhile there is a delay in shipping.

FINAL. We do not accept returned merchandise. If you are have
not tried our brands before and feel sensitivities or allergies might be an
issue, we suggest you see a retail location in your area to try products
out. Our web site is a courtesy and convenience for customers that
already enjoy and benefit from the brands we feature.
We are a retail
establishment and do not sell wholesale to other businesses.

color cosmetics items are allergy tested. We feature products

some of our vendors use some ingredients that are not certified organic
and some are developed in labs. We try to document all the

In her aesthetics practice, Ms. Peterson has
been working with alpha and beta-hydroxy acids and light
chemical peels for over 25 years, providing clients with safe and
effective skin resurfacing procedures.
Since 1998 she has
performed Microdermabrasion as well, developing a specialty practice
using the Mattioli Ultra Peel from Italy. In 2000 she added the Ultra
Sonic Rejuvenation to her
services, using ultra sound technology to improve the look, feel and
health of skin.
