Spin Trap is better than ordinary antioxidants. Why? These strive to find harmony in a chaotic world!
Anti Oxidants are substances that will protect biochemicals, like cosmetic ingredients and foods, living tissues and fluids, from oxidizing. Free radicals are elements found in nature that have morphed into forces that damage cell membranes, DNA, lipids and proteins. They can cause mutations, even cancer. Some sources of free radicals are smoke and air pollution, X rays, prescription and non prescription drugs, gamma rays, auto-oxidation, spoiled food, enzymatic oxidation and respiratory burst. Generally speaking, antioxidants destructively deal with free radicals. Free radicals are normal oxygen-bearing units that wander off their intended paths of usefulness, spinning chaotically and causing havoc. Spin Traps constructively deal with them in a passive way, intercepting them before the damage is done. Antioxidants chemically react with free radicals to convert the rogue oxygen (reactive oxygen species) into water (which the body has plenty of anyway). Spin Traps attach themselves to free radicals, capture these wayward oxygen species and plug them back into their intended goal of tissue respiration. Free radicals contain vital oxygen for the deepest tissue which is most vulnerable to hypoxia, i.e. low oxygen conditions. Antioxidants can contribute to hypoxia by indiscriminately converting oxygen to water. Oxygen is breathable everywhere in the body. Water is not breathable anywhere (unless you're a fish). Antioxidants are not bad. They are good, but Spin Trap is superior. Too much antioxidants is a bad thing. The more Spin Trap, the better. In his book, The Wrinkle Cure, Dr. Perricone writes about Spin Traps: "Spin Traps: Stopping Free-Radical Damage Before it Begins". He explains that "Spin Traps create a barrier - a trap - that holds free radicals in place, so that they can be stopped before they scar the cells that make up your skin". He very clearly explains how "Spin Traps work and how researchers found that the traps actually prevented the free radicals from moving from place to place and damaging cells, and that the odds are these free-radical fighters will become a highly effective method of maintaining a youthful, radiant complexion throughout life".
PBN is the most extensively researched and widely used Spin Trap
The best know Spin Trap is Phenyl Butyl Nitrone (PBN, aka Nitrone). We have PBN in our formulations. The most commonly used spin trap and the standard which measures new ones is Alpha Phenyl N Tert Butyl Nitrone. Hundreds of studies have been conducted over the last ten years that have tested PBN and other "spin traps" in numerous conditions. Spin traps have been shown to affect cellular oxidation states and oxidatively sensitive enzyme systems.
Spin Traps work differently than antioxidants
Recently, researchers found that the underlying mechanism of "spin trap" activity differs from antioxidants. Known as the "intelligent" anti-oxidant, the only AO that distinguishes between good oxygen molecules and bad ones (reactive oxygen species). Spin Traps protect good oxygen, preventing it from going bad, by reading the spin of a molecule.
Each molecule in the body has a signature energy state that identifies its current role in the body. If it is where it belongs, it will hum with healthy vibrations. If not, it will be spinning wildly, disconnected from the process that gave birth to it. This wild spinning is dangerous to healthy molecules. Like a magnet, Spin Trap pulls the spinning rogues, trapping them and restoring them to their normal vibrational state and connects them back to the parental substrate from which they came. In short, like a tuning fork, humming errant free radicals back into harmony.
Spin traps suppress pro-inflammatory conditions. Arguably, this mechanism involves actions at a level proximal to oxidatively sensitive signal amplification systems rather than simple neutralization of free radicals. Spin traps destroy age-inducing free radicals in skin. Spin Traps are potent antioxidant superoxide dismutase, with their own skin anti-aging and scar-reducing properties. Spin traps compliment other skin-anti-aging treatments such as Vitamin-C and alpha-hydroxyacids. PBN has a wide range of practical applications
Reducing or preventing inflammation, one of the primary culprits associated with the chronic degenerative aging of the skin. Whether due to acne or other bacterial infections, sun burns, rashes, poor diet (especially high in sugar or dairy), smoking, alcohol consumption, allergic responses (hives) and other instigators, inflammation leads to discoloration of the skin, melasma, lines and wrinkling of the skin.
Repairing tissue stress and damage. They are effective at doses much lower than those necessary to trap free radicals, and may be more effective with concurrent antioxidant treatment, whether skincare cosmetics or supplements used on a daily basis.
Healing from serious burns is limited by the inability of the repairing vascular system to supply the rapidly growing cutaneum. Periods of ischemia in the dermis will occur as the growing skin cannot be adequately supplied. This hypoxia or ischemia results in the production of oxygen free radicals and either limits the rate of recovery and/or promotes the generation of scar tissue. Systemic and topical spin-trapping compounds such as PBN can be used to improve the rate of healing and decrease scar formation.
Aging has been demonstrated to be associated with the production of abnormally high levels of oxidized proteins. The consequence of this increased level of protein oxidation is an abnormally low level of critical enzymes in the affected cells. Most, if not all, cells in the body will undergo abnormally high levels of protein oxidation and there will be decreases in antioxidant systems and abnormally low levels of mitochondrial function. The protein oxidation is thought to arise from oxygen free radicals, largely generated via a metal catalyzed reaction within the cell. Studies have now been conducted that daily administration of a free radical spin trapping compound, PBN, for fourteen days completely reverses this process. Not only is the level of protein oxidation decreased, but the abnormally low level of enzyme activity is restored to normal.
Pre-surgical treatment to enhance recovery - Tissue healing often involves periods of hypoxia or ischemia as the recovering tissue outgrows the vascular supply. PBN can decrease the damage associated with this period of ischemia.
Spin Traps could provide unique protection against free radical damage that complements and enhances the activities of the classical Anti-Oxidant’s like vitamin’s C and E, Glutathione, R-Lipoic acid and a wide variety of phyto-chemically derived free radical fighters. Spin traps are currently being explored as potential therapeutic agents, as they have been shown to block or reverse the damage associated with a variety of disease states. It has recently been shown that they exert this benefit by altering signal transduction pathways, and reducing systemic inflammation or cellular damage from sun, smoking, poor health and so on.
