Developed over 30 years ago in Italy, by Mattioli Engineering, the  microdermabrador was only introduced into the United States in 1996 as a controlled exfoliation using sterile "medical grade" corundum crystals. Since that time, the technique known as microdermabrasion has been tremendously popular for its results in the successful treatment of many different skin problems and the lack of side affects recorded.   Repeated treatments yield excellent results for scar revision, sun damage, textural irregularities, aging skin, post inflammatory hyper-pigmentation and melasma.  With the aid of fine micro-crystals, generated through a delicate Pyrex closed vacuum loop hand piece held at a precise 45 ° angle to the skin, the effects are a superficial skin polishing with no heat, bruising or swelling.   A gentle, superficial, mechanical exfoliation of the stratum corneum (no bleeding), microdermabrasion uses fine streams of corundum crystals to exfoliate tiny pin dots of skin from the skin's surface, which are hygienically vacuumed away.   The surface of the skin when examined under 15x magnification, following a Professional Microdermabrasion treatment, looks like  thousands of exfoliated dots.   Due to the crystals striking the skin at a very high velocity, a small particle of skin is removed, forcing the skin to replace this 'dot' of skin that was exfoliated, with new younger cells.  This process encourages new collagen and elastin to form, creating smoother and refiner skin texture.  Fine lines, texture, scarring, and hyper pigmentation are visibly improved. . 

The recovery: The skin is lightly pink for a 1-2 hours on average. The skin will feel very soft and smooth.  A few days post-treatment, the skin may have areas of dryness and flaking as the new cells emerge. This is a natural part of the skin resurfacing. 

  In as little as 30 minutes, this gentle abrasive technique efficiently produces satisfying results.  Treatments are applied in a course of weekly or bi-weekly sessions typically, but once your treatment series is done you can continue with home care regimen or regular facials and just do quarterly "boosters" for maintenance.  No artificial ingredients, parabens, fragranced products or "chemicals of concern" are used in our treatments.

   As a licensed aesthetician (and an owner of the machines for over 13 years)  I have been able to treat clients with skin blemishes and disorders that were previously thought to be irreversible.  I have performed thousands of these and  continue my advanced training to make sure my  procedures are as effective as possible.   I offer  counsel as to home care, cosmetic preparations,  nutritional advice and  some easy lifestyle changes.  This helps people experience a distinct, effective treatment program  to remedy even the most chronic and disfiguring complexion problems.  Depending on the skin type and problem we are addressing, you can plan to spend an hour or more in treatment with me.  The first session may last 2 hours so I can answer questions you have and evaluate your overall skin health.  I have designed several distinctively different "facial" formats to choose from ... just, , know that these are not fluffy, steaming, pampering facials...with all that exfoliation there is limited massage and few lotions used so the skin will not be over stimulated after the machine is turned off!  See my facials page if you would like something less "clinical"!  I offer many different types of skin rejuvenation treatments 'cuz sometimes you may just want to relax, get some TLC and have glowing skin.  Microdermabrasion is pro-gressive as opposed to a -gressive, and is not painful.  For those who are used to monthly facials, alternating every few months with a microderm is very useful to boost your program.  Monthly microdermabrasion is popular for those who need deep cleansing of the pores, blackheads or some acne damage control and then an alternating schedule is recommended for maintenance.  The average treatment program for more serious work, like correcting sun damage, deep facial lines or working on old acne scars, is every 7 - 10 days for 6 weeks.  Of course, that is a very individual scenario, and success is contingent upon adhering to the whole program - not just showing up for 1 or 2  procedures.   I also put clients on an effective skin care program to use at home, so the skin is treated daily in between visits.  If you are not a good candidate for Microdermabrasion, I will discuss MLD or Ultra Sonic treatment for you.

   No procedure, medical or otherwise, is a "stand alone" cure - one must be willing to work on a total health scenario to help the skin improve:  diet that is rich in whole grains (unless you are gluten intolerant);  organically grown fruits and vegetables packed with nutrients; plenty of pure water - drank daily; avoidance to unprotected sun exposure and burning; plenty of sleep; no smoking; limited caffeine; no processed white or brown sugar; good stress management practices; exercise (even limited movement is good to keep the circulation of blood and lymphatic fluid moving), green tea and supplementation of vitamins, minerals, herbs and other nutrients.
