  • PIH can occur with various disease processes that affect the skin. These processes include allergic reactions, infections, trauma (wounds, bruises, abrasions; injuries to kidneys, spleen or liver - in a car accident for example) and photo toxic eruptions (allergic reactions to drugs coupled with exposure to sunlight), from picking acne lesions, tweezing or waxing hair, electrolysis, laser treatments, tattoos and  piercing.  See photographs at top of page which demonstrate PIH post-op...

  • Common inflammatory diseases that result in PIH include acne excoriee, lichen planus, systemic lupus erythematosus, chronic dermatitis, xeroderma pigmentosum and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, especially erythrodermic variants.

  • Pityriasis versicolor
         Pityriasis versicolor is a common skin condition caused by infection of the dead outer layer of skin cells with a yeast fungus. This causes spots or patches that have either reduced or increased pigmentation - they may be pale and white, brown or even salmon pink.   The rash usually begins on the back (or at least this is where people tend to notice it) and slowly spreads. There are often no other symptoms, although sometimes the spots are a little dry and flaky. See a dermatologist for a diagnosis before self-treating.
         A dose of sunshine can make the difference in pigmentation more obvious so many people first discover the rash when they start unwrapping themselves in the spring or summer.
         The condition isn't contagious. Most of us carry the yeast which causes it on our skin without problems, until some event or trauma to the skin allows the yeast to set up an infection.
         Treatment is simple - you can get antifungal creams or lotions from the pharmacy that must be used regularly all over the skin to clear the fungus. This usually gets rid of the yeast very quickly. However, the skin colour of the spots won't change back to normal until the depigmented areas have been shed, which can take weeks if left untreated.   We sell exfoliating body cleansers and lotions to speed up the removal of damaged cells...see products.  Support your immune system by having a medical or naturopathic doctor treat the systemic yeast (Candida) and make dietary changes .

Safer household cleansers?


    If you or anyone in your household are sensitive, have auto-immune  or other health issues or are vulnerable to chemical toxins, research online for more information.  If you have young children, especially ones crawling or playing on the floor or carpeting or you have pets, it is very important that you take their safety and health into consideration with any cleaning, air freshening or fragrancing products you use indoors.  When no windows are opened due to weather, these chemicals build up inside the spaces - houses, apartments and offices, when combined with each other form gases and  toxic compounds that living things breathe in all day and night.  Toxins that also build up on hair, fur, upholstery, fabrics and skin.
     Almost all household cleaning products contain some toxic ingredients, and many contain carcinogens or suspected carcinogens. However, the danger the chemicals pose really depends on how often you use the products and the length of time you're exposed to the fumes. For those with chronic skin problems, like allergies, acne, KP, melasma and more, exposure to sun with these on your skin is a concern!  If you use any of these ingredients in cleaning the house (or office or car) at least wear gloves and disposable face mask (found at drug stores and medical supply stores) and wash all exposed skin well immediately.  Here's a list of several of the common chemicals found in household products and the symptoms they can cause:

The Environmental Protection Agency (www.epa.gov) advises buying only nontoxic, unscented cleaning products; look for them in health-food stores. We use Bac Out by Bio-Kleen.  Another possibility is to substitute gentler products such as baking soda, borax, pure olive oil (not EVOO), fresh lemon or the essential oil of the fruit (found in health stores, day spas and bath shops), club soda, organic brown or white vinegar; coarse, unbleached and unrefined salts and vegetable oil-based liquid soap for most household cleaning.  

Always recycle your old household cleaning products, your cosmetics containers and pharmaceuticals (including aspirin) to your trash hauler.  Do Not Flush or Rinse these containers - the chemicals are not usually processed in the sewer treatment facilities.  Your landfill center is where these items are treated before going into the landfill.  Contain your city information center to make sure.  

Please take note:  ladies, if you are using any kind of hormone therapy - birth control, fertility therapy, menopause, post hysterectomy, PCOS, endometriosis for example, please discuss with your doctor the problems of melasma, skin cancer and  facial hair growth.  If you are taking birth control pills and your doctor wants to put you on antibiotics for acne or for illnesses, please ask questions:  it has been determined that some medications like them will render your birth control pills useless.  Unprotected sun exposure will cause problems with your skin's pigmentation, by the way, and set you up for risks like melasma.  Read more about melasma on our web page by clicking here


Using Hand Sanitizer Reduces Illnesses, USA Study Finds

  Using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer gel significantly reduces the spread of gastro-intestinal infections, influenza and common cold in the home, researchers have proven.  In a 5 month study of 292 family  homes with small children in the Boston area, half of which were given the sanitizers.  The study found that  those who used the gel had a 59% reduction in the spread of GI illnesses.  They were told to place bottles of hand sanitizers around the home and apply it to hands after using the toilet, before handling food and after diaper changes.  The other half of study families were given materials on nutrition and told not to use hand sanitizers.  Study published in issue of Pediatrics.

Editor's note:  if you spot a bump on your skin with a crater in it GO SEE A DERMATOLOGIST!  It might be "contagious Molluscum."  Commonly spread through using unsanitary towels and gym equipment, sharing clothes, linens or cosmetics, it will spread on your body if you pick or rub the bumps.

 MMP stands for “matrix metalloproteinase”. MMPs are enzymes naturally present in skin – their job is to break down proteins. But, if in excess, they begin over-attacking proteins, including the skin’s extra cellular matrix (which is a collection of tissue molecules including collagen, fibronectins, proteoglycans and elastin). When damaged, the extra cellular matrix becomes weakened and irregular, resulting in the common signs of aging (reduced elasticity, wrinkling, and capillary dilation). MMP inhibitors bind to and disarm MMPs, preventing their damage to healthy proteins. Thus, the structural integrity of the extra cellular matrix is preserved and the youthful state of the skin maintained. The body makes its own MMP inhibitors, called TIMPs (tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase), but research is showing that the combination of topical MMP inhibitors with the body’s own TIMPs acts as a superior anti-aging team. There is also additional research going on currently to investigate the potential connection between excessive MMP destruction and skin cancers.
