     Owner, aesthetician Joy-Marie Peterson has  been in the skin care business for over 35 years and continues to research and test products and ingredients for our clients special needs.  She understands that men have distinctly different complexion problems from women's and prefer unique packaging, scents and applications.

In the United States, incidence of reported cases Melanoma of the skin has

  • increased significantly by 7.7% per year from 2003 to 2005 among men. Increased by 2.9% for women in the same period
  • melanoma deaths for American men have remained level between 1990 to 2005, while decreasing for women.

In 2010, 114,900 Americans were diagnosed with Melanoma - the most dangerous/preventative form of skin cancer.  Fatality statistics are not available at this time.This dispite all the products on the market for sun protection.

This means men are just missing or ignoring the warnings.  Check out our Sun and Skin Cancer page to learn how to stay safe and how to check your self for symptoms.  If you have a suspicious mole or spot, immediately phone a dermatologist for a check up.  Inquire as to whether you are speaking to a medical office that practices dermatological medicine as opposed to beauty injections like Botox and Restylane.  Be clear, too, about your concern that it may be cancerous.  If you have never had moles checked and you have a history of sun exposure (or tanning beds), you should book a complete mole check by time you are 35.  And repeat it every year.  My biggest gripe of late is that more doctors only want to spend time with people paying for expensive beauty services.  As you may know, it's 'way more profitable to sell injections of, say, Botox than just billing an office visit to look at someone's skin.  Unless a dermatologist is a surgeon, they have to refer patients elsewhere to operate on skin cancers thereby losing even more profitable billable hours.  Sigh, sad times when we can't trust our doctors to have our best interests in mind.  For more information, go to Sun.

Microdermabrasion is a favorite for men with complexion problems

Important note

     The American Cancer Society reports that it expects over 1.2 million new cases of skin cancer to be diagnosed this year in America, 55,000 will be the most dangerous:  melanoma.  By December 26, 2008 it was  estimated by the Society that over 9000 cases were fatal that year.   Most people own sunscreen products but simply forget to carry them with them all day to reapply.  Its important to reapply the product every 2 hours during exposure, including driving.  Every 90 minutes when in or near water, snow and ice.   Don't rub sunscreen into the skin like a moisturizer -  leave a film on the skin to help deflect sun rays.  Read your labels when shopping:  check the expiration date and look for "broad or full  spectrum,  UVA UVB" on the packaging.  For more information on sun damage click here.
